Jalopnik offers an in-depth article on Ford’s new “MyFord” and “MyLincoln” touch screen systems!

Ford led the auto industry with in-car infotainment systems when it released its super successful SYNC system. SYNC allowed phone and MP3 player control with simple voice commands. Several years have now passed and SYNC has seen its share of upgrades including the ability to dial 911 on your phone for you if you are involved in an accident!
Well Ford has decided to up the ante a bit and has released its newest system at the Consumer Electronics Show and its called “MyFord” (or “MyLincoln” in a Lincoln automobile.) The system is supposedly very straight forward and will allow vast amounts of control over your phone, climate control, navigation system and entertainment system with voice commands and controls mounted on the steering wheel.

Ford will announce another innovative feature on its SYNC in car infotainment system. The system will allow users to “tag” a song while driving. What is tagging exactly? Well, say you’re driving and you hear a song you really like, and want to know what it is. You press the “tag” button and SYNC will store the song name and artist. Once you plug in your iPod it will download the list and then when you connect to your computer, iTunes will automatically bring up the songs you tagged, allowing you to preview them and then purchase if you’d like. Ford has announced that it will be offering SYNC as an open source program, meaning that independent developers will be able to create applications for SYNC. This is great news meaning the capability and usefulness of SYNC will just expand year over year as more apps become available.
Every great piece of software needs a trial run, so Ford turned to students from the University of Michigan to help write some trial apps for SYNC. The idea sounds really interesting and you can check out all of the details on the few apps seen over at Autoblog.

Ford to offer upgraded SYNC, possibly for iPhone-like apps!

Ford has been working hard to keep its in-car connectivity software, SYNC, in the lead of other infotainment systems. The system currently lets you control your MP3 player and cell phone through a bluetooth connection, it can also give you directions along with weather, traffic and gas prices in your area. Well, Ford has an upgrade that it will be showing this January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas called “mobile apps.” There is currently no word on exactly what this upgrade means, but speculation is that it will allow SYNC to control your applications like Pandora or Twitter. For more, stay tuned, but for now, head on over to the Detroit News.
