2010 Chevrolet Equinox sales so strong, GM adding capacity at a second plant!
Earlier this year we posted a story about General Motors adding a third shift at the Ingersoll, Ontario plant that builds the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. However, demand has proved to be so strong that more production capacity was needed. Therefore, GM will expand the body shop at Ingersoll and then ship the body shells to the Oshawa, Ontario plant that builds the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and Impala, where a third shift will build the Equinox. All of the workers laid off at Ingersoll will be brought back, plus an additional 70 workers to help build the bodies. Over at Oshawa, 600 employees will be reinstated, making this another victory for GM’s comeback. For the full story, head on over to Autoblog.

General Motors to repay another $1 Billion to the United States Government
I know most Americans aren’t happy that GM and Chrysler were given billions of dollars of taxpayer money to stay afloat. However the vast majority of those Americans are pretty stupid and don’t seem to understand how many jobs were at stake and how huge the impact would have been on our economy as a whole. Well now General Motors seems to be proving those people wrong; people who said it was a waste of money. The General plans to drop another $1 billion check off at the Capital building in Washington (or wherever it is that they take huge checks) towards the $6.7 billion in loans it received last year. This means $2 billion has been repaid to the US and $384 million has been repaid to the Canadian government. If GM succeeds at paying off the full loan by June 30, 2010, the American people will have their money back a full 5 years ahead of schedule. GM could also go public again later this year, meaning the rest of the government owned portion of GM could get its money back as well. For more details, head on over to The Detroit Free Press.

Does the 2011 Ford Mustang GT produce over 430 horsepower???
Somehow the gang over at Inside Line managed to take a 2011 Ford Mustang GT, packing the new 5.0L V8, over to a dyno to see how the new ‘Stang would stand up against the Camaro. The answer? The car is rated at 412 horsepower and 390 pound feet of torque, but the car used produced 395 horsepower at the wheels! This means, when taking into account driveline losses of 11-13%, the new Mustang produces somewhere in the range of 440 horsepower! For more head on over to Autoblog or Edmunds.
GM to move Camaro to “Alpha” platfrom with Cadillac ATS?

In a recent Motor Trend article, some speculation has begun on the next generation Camaro. That’s right, the 5th gen hasn’t been out much more than a year, and already GM is thinking ahead. Could this be a sign of a new and improved GM? Lets hope so. Anyway, the Trend as I’m going to call them, is claiming that GM could move the 6th generation Camaro to the same platform as the upcoming Cadillac ATS. The ATS will slot in below the CTS (which will also be on the platform) so this could be a good way for the General to help lower per vehicle costs on the as yet unnamed platform. This strategy seems pretty smart as all three cars will need to lower their weight to improve fuel economy and performance figures. For more, head on over to the Trend.

New GM program allows for employees to drive cars home, can you say free marketing???!

General Motors has decided that it needs its people to be on board with the new products it’s putting out. After all, if the employees who make the cars won’t drive them, how can you get the rest of the buying public to? Well to solve that issue, GM is letting employees at the Renaissance Center take home vehicles at the end of the day. The program is called “The Company Vehicle Ambassador Program” and about 500 employees have already signed up! This sort of free marketing is just the thing GM could need at a time like this. General Motors has announced that the all new Cadillac XTS sedan will be built in Oshawa, Ontario, on the same lines as the Chevrolet Camaro and all-new Impala, as well as the upcoming 2011 Buick Regal.
