2010 Chevrolet Equinox sales so strong, GM adding capacity at a second plant!
Earlier this year we posted a story about General Motors adding a third shift at the Ingersoll, Ontario plant that builds the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. However, demand has proved to be so strong that more production capacity was needed. Therefore, GM will expand the body shop at Ingersoll and then ship the body shells to the Oshawa, Ontario plant that builds the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and Impala, where a third shift will build the Equinox. All of the workers laid off at Ingersoll will be brought back, plus an additional 70 workers to help build the bodies. Over at Oshawa, 600 employees will be reinstated, making this another victory for GM’s comeback. For the full story, head on over to Autoblog.

GM facing first recall on its 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain

The 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and its GMC sibling, the Terrain, have been selling like hotcakes (whatever that means!) General Motors has moved over 59,000 units this year alone, making this recall all the more painful. The issue facing the cute-utes is a faulty defroster control module. Customers will be notified by GM about the issue. For more details, head on over to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The folks over at PickupTrucks.com have some photos of the 2011 GMC Sierra 3500 which show the new corporate GMC grille that debuted on the 2010 GMC Terrain. The HD truck features the new 6.6L “clean” Duramax diesel meant to meet the new U.S. emissions regulations for diesels. There are rumors that GM is also developing a new gas engine of large displacement, possibly up to 7.0L, that will feature direct injection to produce massive power but at a lower cost to the consumer when compared to the diesel. For more details, head on over to PickupTrucks.com.

GM to spend $100 million to increase Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain production

It appears that the “New GM” has a pair of hits on their hands. The 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and its sibling the GMC Terrain have been selling so well that General Motors has announced a $100 million investment in the Ingersoll, Ontario plant that produces the cute ‘utes. This can really only be seen as good news for GM, the CAW and the environment, as the two vehicles are rated at 32 mpg highway, more than the Toyota Rav4 and Honda CR-V. For more information, head on over to Reuters.

GM officially out of bankruptcy process…now the hard part begins

As of 9:00AM this morning, the New GM has been born. Owned mostly by the U.S. government, and also by the UAW retiree health-care trust, the governments of Canada and Ontario, and old GM bondholders, the New GM will be different, says CEO Fritz Henderson. “Business as usual is over,” he said to a group gathered in the offices of a bankruptcy lawyer in New York.
Among the details this morning it was revealed that Bob Lutz, current vice chairman, would not be retiring but instead overseeing most creative work at the company. Hopefully the future gets brighter for GM, as new products like the 32 mpg Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain hit the market, the Chevrolet Cruze and Volt move closer to reality, and the new line of Cadillacs comes out. For more, head on over to the Detroit Free Press.

The 2010 GMC Terrain is built on the same platform as the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. Now before everyone starts crying “badge engineering” take a look at the two vehicles side by side. The GMC features it’s own distinct sheet metal and interior layout. However, these two vehicles do share when it comes to powertrains and that is a very good thing. The reason? The Equinox and Terrain both come standard with a 2.4L Ecotec 4-cylinder that achieves an EPA estimated 32 mpg on the highway. That’s a class leading figure, even beating the Ford Escape hybrid by 1 mpg.

2010 GMC Terrain (GM)

The Terrain (sibling to the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, with which the Terrain shares pretty much everything but the sheet metal and interior) will be on sale this summer and is expected to be able to hit 30 mpg on the highway! For more details, along with stills of the vehicle, and a 10 minute video of the Terrain out on the road, head on over to Autoblog.

More GM news today. So, an embargo was broken using Twitter which, according to Jalopnik, is the first time that has happened. The official unveiling of the new GMC Terrain is scheduled for April 5Th, but information has been leaked out that the GMC Terrain will seat 5, and achieve 30 mpg on the highway. This is a huge jump forward for GM, as this puts them above their key competition, the Toyota Rav4 and Honda CR-V, even though this vehicle is larger than them both. In the full story on Autoblog, they state that the only vehicles in it’s class to do better, are it’s future cousin, the 2010 Chevy Equinox, the Ford Escape Hybrid and the Saturn Vue Hybrid. More proof that the domestics are fighting back and winning the war on fuel economy.
