2009 Ford F-150

It’s always good to see an American automobile on the top of the best selling cars list for 2009…we are after all, in America.  The Ford F-150 managed to take the #1 spot again for the umpteenth year in a row, and the Chevrolet Silverado wasn’t far behind in the #3 spot.  The Ford Fusion and Escape managed to make the list as well.  For the full list, head on over to Autoblog.

2009 Ford F-150

PickupTrucks.com has put together a list of the most significant trucks of the past ten years and the Domestics have taken 5 of the top 10 spots!  Vehicles like the Chevrolet Avalanche and Ford F-150 SVT Raptor were vehicles that broke the mold for a full production vehicle.  The F-150 and 2001+ GM heavy duty trucks made the list because they are what American automakers do best, the Japanese just can’t compete.  For the full list head on over to PickupTrucks.com.

Ford has turned to a newer form of motion capture technology to see how people interact with their vehicle.  A real live human being, wearing about 50 sensors, is followed in and out and around a vehicle by a camera.  The camera tracks those 50 points and uses the information to help Ford engineers determine a better location or way to put on a seatbelt, or a more intuitive way for occupants to enter or exit a vehicle.  For more details, head on over to Autoblog.

Chevrolet Orlando

General Motors has some extra room this year at the Detroit Auto Show since Saturn, Pontiac and Saab will not be there, so it has decided to do something innovative.  The General will offer test drives at the show for the nearly 1 million people who will come through the show this January.  With sales down in 2009, automakers are trying to figure out anything they can do to boost sales.  This will give potential customers the opportunity to try out one of the many new cars from GM and then talk to sales people on the show floor!  For more details, head on over to the Detroit News.

Has Toyota been covering up its quality issues to save its good name???

2004 Sienna LE

The LA Times has just detailed a number of cases where Toyota has tried to cover up quality issues on their vehicles; some of those issues have even resulted in casualties.  Most of the article focuses on unintended acceleration cases where Toyota has denied fault, refused to give data to customers and their lawyers, and bought back vehicles only to sell them to other customers!  Looks like Toyota is in for a much longer and harder road ahead as it tries to convince customers that it really didn’t just care about making a quick buck off the American people.  For the full story, head on over to the LA Times.

Volvo logo

Ford has announced that it is selling Volvo to China’s Geely Motors.  This marks the final sale of assets for Ford, after selling Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover.  This should give Ford some extra cash on hand to pay down some debt or advance a few programs, and also allow Ford to focus on…well, Ford!  For more details, head on over to Autoblog.
